to the mindful explorations of depth psychology. We strive to offer
innovative and creative approaches to current topics in clinical
psychology.

Applied shamanism offers access to an immensely creative and intuitive process for both the therapist and the client that is a powerful tool of accelerated change and psychological growth. It is an elegant method of inviting the soul to be present. This 4 part series of workshops introduces techniques and concepts from traditional shamanism as it may be applied within a psychotherapeutic context. The uniqueness of this series is that it is being introduced specifically to a psychotherapist audience with a careful, grounded approach that bridges modern psychology with ancient, earth-based wisdom traditions. It is offered with a significant amount of clinical case material that is translated into both depth psychology terms as well as the metaphoric language of shamanism.
Each session builds upon previous ones. It is highly encouraged to attend all four sessions although not required.
Please refer to each session's pre-requistes for guidelines.

Introduction to Shamanic Journeying:
An Eco-psychological Perspective
The technique of the shamanic journey has been employed for thousands of years in many cultures throughout the world as a tool for knowledge and healing. It is a powerful tool in psychotherapy as a way to facilitate cognitive and emotional shifts and to open the door to creativity. The journey is an encounter of deep inner wisdom. It offers clear access to realms beyond ordinary, waking awareness and to forces in nature that are available to instruct and heal. The technique is fundamentally a form of active meditation, or active imagination, supported by a light trance state.
In this introductory workshop, we will introduce the basic premises and techniques of shamanic journeying from a psychological framework. as well as presenting a traditional model. The intersection of the two forms a basis of understanding eco-psychology and moves toward a working model for application. We will experience at least two journeys to demonstrate the power these deep imaginal states. All of the material will be presented in a manner that is accessible to the lay person and the psychotherapist. There will be a presentation of specific examples of how this technique may be applied in clinical work as well as an outline of the personal value to the practitioner.
No previous experience is necessary.
Part 2
Sunday, November 1, 2009
10:00 am to 4:30 pm
Shamanic Psychotherapy:
Basic Processes
In this workshop we will explore the traditional shamanic journey as it may be directly applied in psychotherapy. The technique is fundamentally a form of active meditation, or active imagination. The power of vision and a cultivated trust in the forces of nature can restore the "dis-spiritedness" of depression, undo the patterning of trauma, and reconnect body and mind with spirit. As therapists or other healing professionals, the journey to our inner wisdom can have a profound effect on our personal lives and work, build confidence in our intuition, and lend practical application in the clinical setting. Participants will explore the delicate art of introducing shamanic concepts into the clinical container. We will examine the subtleties of metaphor, imagery, language and the various portals to the creative unconscious that are available. There will be many clinical case examples offered of varying clinical applications of shamanic journeying and the use of the eco-psychological frame. Participants will have a deepened experience of the journey process.
Part one, or an introduction to shamanic journeying is highly recommended.
Part 3
Saturday, January 23, 2010
10:00 - 4:30 pm
Shamanic Psychotherapy:
Advanced Processes
The active engagement of the therapist's of psyche and journey informed formulations of the clinical situation will be explored. We will move between the dimensions of psychological process and soul work as the delicate interface of practitioner with client is examined. Participants will have a first hand experience of an inner, visioning journey on behalf of another. There will be clear clinical examples and in-depth case studies of various levels of soul retrieval processes while reviewing specific techniques and clinical applications. We will introduce practical and grounded integration of alternative healing techniques within a traditional clinical framework. We will explore a range of application from use of metaphor and symbolic action to "coax" back the lost soul parts to therapist's actual participation in the subconscious healing process of client.
Part 2 or instructor permission required.
Part 4
Saturday ,February 6, 2010
10:00 - 4:30 pm
location: TBA
Shamanic Psychotherapy:
Integration and eco-psychology
As psychotherapists actively integrating shamanic practices into our clinical work, we are drawing heavily upon the traditions and world-view of earth based wisdom traditions. These traditions hold a reverence for the natural world and a respect for the reciprocity of environment. The deeper the clinical work goes within the client's psyche, the further the work also extends into the world that contains us. This day will summarize the processes of shamanic work within a clinical application with numerous case examples but will also place the work within the framework of an ecological view. We will review the use of ritual and land-based meditations as a means of integrating deep inner visioning.

Shamanic Practice Group for Psychotherapists
Jan Edl Stein, MFT
Mill Valley (Marin), CA
9:00 am to 11:00 am first Friday of each month
6 month commitment requested after initial group visit
2 Continuing education units for MFTs and LCSWs or training
credit for interns
fee: $50 per session
This on-going practice group for women psychotherapists and other healing arts practitioners meets monthly in an intimate Marin (Mill Valley) meditation space. This is a group for women who have some experience with shamanic journeying and are dedicated to practicing the technique in a small group format that supports the inner development of the practitioner. The structure of the group is typically a focused meditation, shaping of intention, and a longer journey. After our journeys there is reflection upon the material that is arising. Various themes and core shamanic techniques will be gently introduced in resonance with the group process. The intention is that as a group we will go deeper into our shamanic practices, using our journeys to support and strengthen our work in the world. The journeys and meditations will reflect the time and place in the wheel of the year cycle.
Further details provided upon inquiry. Interview required for admission.
